Allegations Addressed
Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal, during a statement on Wednesday, refuted claims made by “political opponents” who are disseminating misleading information about the imposed export duty on onions. He sought to rectify the narrative and assure the public that the measures taken are in the best interest of consumers.

Reassurance for Farmers
Goyal extended a reassuring message to farmers, urging them not to be anxious. He emphasized that the government is committed to supporting them during this period of change. The Centre has taken proactive steps, including recommencing onion procurement at a rate of Rs 2,410 per quintal for the buffer stock.
Balancing Consumer Interests
Goyal underscored the dual approach adopted by the government. The imposition of a 40% export duty on onions has been instituted to safeguard the interests of consumers. Simultaneously, the government has acted to prevent any potential market disruption by deciding to purchase an additional 2 lakh tonnes of onions directly from farmers. This strategic move aims to avoid situations of abrupt selling.
Buffer Stock Enhancement
The minister also highlighted plans for future actions. If circumstances demand, the government will expand the buffer stock and continue procuring from farmers. Mr. Piyush Goyal (The minister for consumer affairs) highlighted the dedication to maintaining a robust supply chain and ensuring the stability of onion prices in the market.

Historic Rate for Procurement
In a significant announcement, Mr. Goyal revealed that the additional procurement of 2 lakh tonnes of onions will be conducted at a rate of Rs 2,410 per quintal. He described this rate as “historical” and notably higher than the standard Rs 1,800-1,900 per quintal that farmers generally receive from exports.
Encouraging Responsible Discourse
Minister Goyal urged a responsible and fact-based discourse surrounding the export curbs. He urged farmers in onion-producing states not to succumb to panic selling. Furthermore, he informed that the National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) have been directed to engage in onion procurement directly from farmers.
