US Promotes Compromise, China’s Stance Remains Firm
Amidst India’s fervent efforts to secure unanimous support for the New Delhi Declaration at the G20 Summit, the United States has declared its commitment to approaching the summit with a “spirit of compromise.” Their aim is to navigate the numerous contentious issues and craft a joint communique that garners acceptance from all participating nations.
Challenges on the Path to Consensus
However, China’s resistance to condemning Russia for its actions in Ukraine poses a significant obstacle. US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan acknowledges that there is still a considerable journey ahead before a final communique can receive unanimous approval. This sentiment was echoed by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who mentioned en route to India that there is no joint statement yet due to China’s objections related to the Ukraine conflict and climate issues.
Optimism Amidst Uncertainty
Indian authorities, despite these challenges, maintain an optimistic outlook regarding the New Delhi Declaration. They express confidence that the declaration will be presented to the world leaders for their ultimate approval. Sullivan, representing the United States, also conveys a sense of goodwill towards fostering consensus. He emphasizes their commitment to compromise on the contentious issues, with the ultimate goal of crafting a text that all nations can endorse. Sullivan shared these sentiments while aboard Air Force One during President Joe Biden’s journey to India.
China’s Unwavering Stand
Notably, there is no indication of a shift in China’s stance. When questioned about the possibility of a joint declaration, China reiterates its belief that the G20’s primary focus should be on its “mandate” of enhancing macroeconomic policy coordination and stimulating global economic growth. China remains steadfast in asserting that the G20 is not the platform for addressing geopolitical matters. Despite the complexities and differing viewpoints, the G20 Summit serves as a pivotal arena where nations come together to navigate these challenges, fostering dialogue, and seeking common ground to address global concerns.
