In an official statement, the highest court has repudiated any association with a recent social media post that falsely claimed endorsement or issuance by the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The post, which has been labeled as “misleading” and “inaccurate,” inaccurately assigned statements to CJI D Y Chandrachud, urging the public to rally against authorities.
The deceptive quote reads, “Our unwavering commitment is to safeguard India’s constitution and uphold democracy. However, your cooperation is crucial. Unite and assert your rights on the streets against this authoritarian government. Despite their attempts to intimidate, remain fearless and demand accountability. I stand in solidarity with you.”
The Supreme Court’s formal declaration categorically refuted any such communication from the CJI, underscoring his non-involvement. The court underscored that the statement is fabricated and harbors malicious intent.
The release also addressed the propagation of the erroneous post, stating, “The Supreme Court of India has been informed of a circulated social media post (encouraging public protest against authorities) which employs an archived photograph and attributes false statements to the Chief Justice of India.” The court firmly stated, “This post is misleading, driven by ill motives, and deliberately deceitful.”
The statement concluded by asserting that appropriate measures are being taken, including consultations with law enforcement agencies, to address the matter.
