The hearing on Umar Khalid’s bail request has been postponed by the Supreme Court for two weeks. Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid is requesting bail in relation to a charge under the anti-terrorism code UAPA. His alleged participation in the plot that led to the rioting in northeast Delhi in February 2020 is the subject of the case.
The matter shall be heard on non-miscellaneous days, which are often Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, according to the ruling of the bench, which was made up of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi. These days are set aside for issues that demand careful consideration.
Umar Khalid’s attorney, senior counsel Kapil Sibal, concurred with this recommendation.
Umar Khalid’s petition challenges the Delhi High Court’s decision on October 18, 2022, which rejected his bail plea. The high court had ruled against bail, stating that Khalid was in constant communication with other co-accused individuals and that the allegations against him seemed prima facie true.
These riots were reported during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Umar Khalid, who was detained by the Delhi Police in September 2020 and is asking for release, claims he had no criminal involvement in the violence and no connections to any sort of conspiracy with the other detainees.
The Delhi Police rejected Khalid’s bail request in the high court, claiming that his lectures were calculated and addressed sensitive issues such the CAA and NRC as well as the Babri Masjid, triple talaq, Kashmir, and the alleged repression of Muslims.
